Arouca Geopark

The Arouca Geopark, corresponding to the administrative area of the Arouca municipality, is recognised for its exceptional Geological Heritage of international relevance, with particular emphasis on the Giant Trilobites of Canelas, the Castanheira Boulders and the Icnofossils of the Paiva Valley.

The valuable and unique Geological Heritage, covering a total of 41 geosites, constitutes the basis of the Arouca Geopark project, together with a territorial development strategy which will ensure its protection, promotion and use. At the same time and in a complementary way, other important values such as archaeological, ecological, historical, sportive and/or cultural ones are associated, as well as the promotion of ethnography, handcraft and gastronomy of the region, aiming to attract high quality tourism based on the values of Nature and Culture.

The entity responsible for the management of Arouca Geopark is AGA - Arouca Geopark Association.
