Geological Interpretation Center

The Canelas Geological Interpretation Centre is now a unique example of cooperation between the extractive industry and science. This work is the realisation of a dream of the managing partner of the company Ardósias Valério & Figueiredo, Lda., who, after having shown an unusual sensitivity towards the protection of the extraordinary fossils collected in the quarry, decided to go ahead with the construction of this important and beautiful infrastructure, for which he had the support of the company itself and of the Association for the Integrated Rural Development of the Montemuro, Arada and Gralheira Mountains (ADRIMAG).
This building is currently the headquarters of an ambitious project for the future, which aims to create the Arouca Geopark and its recognition by the European Geoparks Network, a subsidiary of UNESCO, from 2008, allowing a sustained development of this wonderful region, based on a high quality scientific tourism.
